Lordships Graffalo wins at Defender Burghley Horse Trials

We couldn’t resist speaking to Archie and Michele Saul when they popped into our Boston showroom today, and asking them about their incredible journey to winning first at the prestigious Defender Burghley Horse Trials.

Their horse, Lordships Graffalo, now a celebrated 12-year-old, has cemented his reputation as a world-class competitor. His journey to the top began when he was just three years old, starting an intensive training regime that would shape him into the champion he is today. A year later, when he turned four, Michelle and Archie purchased him, recognising his potential and beginning a partnership that would bring them to the highest levels of equestrian sport.

Lordships Graffalo’s rise to fame began in earnest in 2022, when he and rider Ros Canter achieved an impressive second place at the renowned Badminton Horse Trials. His success continued to build from there, and in 2023, he not only claimed the title of European Champion in France but also went on to take first place at Badminton that same year—a remarkable feat in the eventing world.

Most recently, in 2024, Lordships Graffalo represented his country at the Paris Olympics, where he competed with the British team and came away with a team gold medal. Fellow British riders Laura Collett and Tom McEwen also delivered strong performances, with Laura securing an individual bronze and Tom placing fourth. This year has truly been an extraordinary one for Lordships Graffalo, Archie, Michele, and the team, marking a series of achievements that will be remembered for years to come.
